I can't say I have a definitive answer, but have experienced similar behavior. I think just clicking "Not Junk" is enough to adjust the rules. After clicking "Not Junk" I always move the message back to my Inbox. But I take a peek at the Junk folder every couple of weeks or so and more often than not there's a message or two in there that have slipped by.

I just think it's because junk detection engines aren't perfect. I still get spam in my inbox as well as real email in my junk folder. It's just those numbers are very low now compared to what they were becoming before junk filters were integrated into email clients. I have the same issue with Thunderbird at work and Gmail. But at least it's manageable.

Hi all,

I was checking my Junk folder in Mail and I found something that I
decided wasn't junk. I clicked the "Not Junk" then "Load Images"
buttons and read the message but then left it in the Junk folder. I
then emptied the Junk folder. I've done this many times before but
I'm only now just wondering. Does Mail adjust it's junk rules
regarding that message even though I left it in the Junk folder? Or
is just clicking "Not Junk" good enough regardless of what folder the
