Yes, I did (direct copy/paste). I'm on 10.5.5 as well.<BR>

I'm on my laptop now, and I get the same behavior. Here's what Terminal displays after I type the command:<BR>

(Unfortunately, even copying the text from Terminal doesn’t show the block cursor IMMEDIATELY following the colon at the end of <Password:>. There’s no space between the prompt and the cursor, and the cursor isn’t blinking. That’s just what happened on my Mac Pro. I can’t type anything, but Terminal still responds to the suggested <Ctrl-C><BR>
