Could it be that it is not formatted in HFS+ (extended) format? If not, and if the format is standard HFS, the minimum filesize will be (80.000.000.000/65536)=1,220,703 Bytes(=1.2MB), so if you have some 500 files, yes that will bring your folder to 600MB no matter how small your files are.
