The new $999 iBook may fit the bill perfectly (and you may get educational discount as faculty at a community college). It is rich on power and features. Comes with Appleworks which includes an entirely adequate presentation package. I did a presentation for faculty and students at my school using exactly this package a few weeks back and it worked just fabulously. I had charts generated by hidden spreadsheets on display pages. Worked slick. If you need real spreadsheet power, as opposed to occasional use to organize and do simple summaries, then you'll want Excel, maybe the entire office package. I occasionally do need such power, so I have MSOffice also, but I do most of my daily work on Appleworks.
