Frustrating iBook sleep problem

I am wondering if this is a hardware (battery) or software issue. Seems like
my five month old 12' 600 MHz iBook's  battery goes to sleep after 20
minutes unplugged and then cannot be woken unless plugged in. Checking the
power says 0% charge (even after plugging it overnight). I have asked Apple
to replace the battery but since it still holds a charge (20 minutes worth)
they said they can't and will only replace a battery that holds less than 10
minutes charge. Pretty disappointing as I am unable to really use my iBook
unplugged.
