I had that same problem some time ago with a Pismo (PowerBook 
G3/400MHz). It was definitely the speakers producing the noise ... and 
nothing could cure it, except from an OS update that Apple posted some 
weeks after the problem first occurred. Don't know which OS version 
this was, but must have been at least 18 months back ...
