[P1] clicking sound on iBook

Apple told me to boot into open firmware and type: reset-nvram <RET> 
and do it 3 times, followed by reset-all.
At first it seemed to work, but later the clicking returned.
Apple also said to take the third-party RAM out. I don't want to do 
that. Why would 3rd party RAM make clicking noises when it's worked for 
7 months?
