Do you have an app called Pith or Pith Helmet installed?  I had 
continual crashes and did all of the plist stuff, ran disk warrior, 
fixed permissions, did single-user mode and fsck, the wholeball of wax 
to no avail.  Then I read on one of the forums about a conflict with 
Pith ..... Safari started right up!
