What platforms are you thinking of? If all machines are Macs you can just use the public folder since this is shared over Appletalk between macs (although I don't know the details). If you need ftp clients then NcFTP (http://www.ncftp.com) is a great free ftp client for OS X - you'll need the developer tools to compile it though, and it's command line only. There is already a command line ftp app in OS X, called ftp, butI prefer NcFTP.
