I have an ClubMac 40 GB external USB drive. I have found the USB connection to be flaky (i.e., almost half the time, I get an I/O error, and have to do whatever I've been doing (I use it only for backup) over again. I'm in the process of setting up a new 15" AlBook, and soon will be in a position to sell both the USB drive and the clamshell 366 SE (no FireWire) iBook. While I'll be willing to sell the drive to you (it cost me about $200 new), I can't say that I recommend USB external drives. I think USB 1 is fine for peripherals like a keyboard and mouse, but too slow and flaky for something like a hard drive.
