USB infrared adapter on G3 ibook OSX

Before my ibook, I had a G3 Wall Street, and used the infrared port to allow
me to access the internet while on the  road using a mobile phone. I now
have a G3 dual USB ibook 500 12" - with no infrared. I recently bought a USB
IRDA plug in adapter, but when I plug it into the ibook, the computer does
not appear to "see" it. The adapter did not come with any software, and is
simply marked "NE120". I am running OSX. If anyone can help out I would be
very grateful!
