Word help....

I installed Word on my ibook and was warned to get the patches or 
updates I believe they are called.  I did download them but made 
perhaps a silly decision...I thought they'd automatically go to the 
Word and do the updates.  However, I've had to do two soft reboots when 
Word would hang on me and now i'm wondering...did I need to do 
something else to make them work?  If so, where will I find them on my 
hard-drive?
