no backlight

Looking for answers. My ibook 500 back light went out. After reading the
apple forums this looks like a common ibook problem.
What is your experiences with DIY repair or buy the cable and installing it
yourself. As the cost for repair is over 300 dollars.
Can see the screen with a lamp close up and when I pug up the ibook to
external monitor it still is working great. Just no back light
