I have done this with albums but not tapes, with albums you must run it through your stereo to get the input high enough, I would expect the same for tapes. I used the aux output ports on my stereo and a patch cable from Radio Shack, it has a mini headphone jack on one end for the computer and 2 rca style jacks on the other for the stereo. I don't know about icebooks but the clamshell requires a usb input adapter, I use the Griffin iMic. ( It has 2 ports, one for input and one for output and a switch on the side ). Once you have the hardware connected you need some software. For OSX I use AudioX, it's really cheap and very easy to use. It saves the sound as .mov files which iTunes can handle fine. ( If you intend to play with the sound file after you import it you will need a better program, there are several but they are more $$ and much more complicated to use.) Under OS9 I recommend Coaster, it's freeware and made just for this purpose. You also need to go to system preferences/ sound and make sure the input is set-up right, I had to up the input volume on mine.( Under OS9 go to controlpanel/sound, I forget the details but basicly you have to tell it what to use for sound input and set the input volume. ) The programs I use assume you are going to record one song at a time and when you pause the recording it takes you to a folder where you set the song title and then bounces you back to the record button- a real boon.
