Meg, Apple changed the iceBook's video-out setup between the first iceBooks
(May 2001) and later versions (the ones with 16MB VRAM). The "nice young
man" at the Apple Store did you a disservice if he didn't ascertain exactly
which iceBook you have.
If your iceBook has a little Reset button next to the headphone port, it
uses one type of adapter. If not, it uses another (the one Tubadude cites
above). Here's a quote from Joe Dombrowski's post from a couple of days ago,
which explains it nicely:
