If it helps, for a 'soft' reboot, you hold down the ctrl and apple keys 
and hit the power button.  Then it restarts and runs First Aid as it 
boots.  They told me that when all else failed, this did the least 
damage.  With 9 and before, sometimes programs just froze up.  At that 
point you can't exit them and can't get anything to work.  I haven't 
needed it in the 6 months I've used X because with it the program just 
quits and doesn't bring the whole system down.

I'm hoping someone will define the difference.
