Sorry about this error, it was very late. Should have been:
I don't remember if VM is optional, if there is a button to turn it 
off, do so. But I think it was in OS 9 that VM had to be used at a 
minimum of 1 mb to get the full speed benefits of OS 9. That means the 
HD space for VM is mandatory and you will not be able to recover it.
