External monitor

I just hooked up an external monitor to my iBook. It's a used Gateway 
17" EV700.

Problem: It's just not that sharp. Is this a function of the Gateway 
unit being old and ugly or is the video output from the iBook less 
than optimal.

I would consider getting a new monitor, but if it doesn't get any 
better than this I'll save my money for a G5. I've always been 
fascinated with those LaCie 19" and 22" monitors with the light 
shields. Any first hand experiences with them?
