Have you tried the following, when you can't get anything other than 
a black screen & freeze?

-hold "Option" key down while starting up (if you have some sort of 
startup CD *already* in the computer, hold "Option" and "Mouse")
-you will get a bright blue screen; still holding the keys,
-insert a startup CD (if it isn't already in there); soon, you will 
see only two icons-- not the usual screen at all.
-Wait for the "watch" to become an "arrow" (this is a "curly" arrow 
on the left of your screen)--it will give you the choice of starting 
from HD or the inserted disk--click the CD/disk option, and then the 
"straight" arrow; voila, it should start up/load just fine.
-now, you are ready to do your repair & checking  :>)
