Someone else posted about this.  I offer an additional observation
for the non-geeks.

SMTP is a pretty good analog of the U. S. Mail.  If you want
to forge a letter from someone, you just put their return address
on the envelope.  Inspecting the postmark might reveal it came
from a different city.
