extra user names

I recall that one of the biggest security holes in most UNIX systems
would be
default passwords being left unchanged (or nonexistent) for the
various system
users (such as UUCP, and the like.) Is this something I should be
worried about?
There are presently 16 users on my iBook, 1 being me, and the other
fifteen
set up by the OS. Should I be concerned about these extra users-- is
someone
able to log in via, say, smmsp?

How does the OS derive these passwords?
