Also, the Hawthorne effect--study subjects who thought they were
being paid attention to improved their performance, whether their
situation was improved or not.  This was like 50 years ago, but
still accepted last I heard.  Tho I personally believe the
empowerment and facilitation of having an iBook at your disposal
would improve performance.
