Has your room temperature changed? This happens to me when the air 
temperature is not quite warm enough for me to turn on the air 
conditioner. My tiBook fan will start howling and when I turn on the 
AC, the fan stops. So there is some critical air temperature, and maybe 
humidity level, at which the fan cycles on or off because the heat is 
not being dissipated. Also, some applications cause more cpu activity 
than others. Minimizing the number of open applications can help reduce 
heat.
