I too had the noise and at first it scared me to think something was
wrong with my new iBook 800. I have owned it now for about 7 months
and in that time the fan has only come on twice. I still don't know
why it came on at those times. As usual here it sits nice and quiet!
I recall that one of the times the fan came on I had just switched back
to os X from 9. I rebooted shortly there after and the fan stopped for
the rest of the day.
I'll agree that it is indeed a blow dryer!
