The problem is that you want the IP address of your router, not of the iMac. Luckily the SMC supports a thing called DDNS which can handle this. You have to have a domain name, though it looks like they'll give you one for free. Since you just need it to be able to log in from home, the fact that it's something like joyce.kicks-ass.net shouldn't be a show stopper (that's really one of the domains they offer names in). See <http://www.dyndns.org> for details. For folks with just a Mac connected directly to the net, there are applications that can handle updating your IP with this service, too.
