Not sure if anybody has answered the obvious.

The AirPort provides a wireless network connection to Macs with AirPort
cards and those on an ethernet network. One with a modem will of course
provide a dialup connection.

So an AirPort base station with a built in modem allows one to roam around
the house with your iBook/PowerBook and not be tethered to a phone line.

Plus, it allows you to share a dialup connection with more than one Mac on
the network (wired or wireless).
