In your System Preferences, choose "Sharing" and select "Firewall." 
There's an option there to turn it off. (Don't forget to turn it back 
on when you can, though.)

If you don't have a file called "hosts" in Library-->Preferences, it's 
not the source of the trouble you're having; don't worry about it.
