adding Panther question

i have a 500 mgz (first icebook) iBook, 256 Ram.
still on 9.2.2
ready to purchase Panther soon.

how do i go about putting it onto the computer without
losing OS 9?
does World Text work with 10?  its what i use most for writing.
do i need any pre-exisiting OS 10?
(i do have the disc for the first OS X, virtually useless)
will i be able to choose which OS boots up ?
any guess when an updated CD will be available with all the patches?
