They're to be found in /var/log and are of use to people who know a bit of UNIX and want to find out what's happening. You could check the logs if e.g. an application keeps freezing to find out why. These files are normaly rotated (truncated and compressed and eventually deleted) when your machine is running 24/24. The file which controls this is /etc/crontab. On an i(power)Book these files tend to grow because normaly the truncation is done around 3:00AM when you're book is off.
