Further to everyone else's answers, I have a 12" 600Mhz iBook that plays DVDs beautifully. Some notes to add though: Some DVDs won't let you copy to the hard drive as an anti-piracy measure. You can probably get around this but I had a few problems with it on some disks (I was experimenting with region 1 discs in a region 2 dvd drive, i know that VLC will play them but I was wondering if I could fool Apple's DVD player into playing the disk from the hard drive and ignoring the region code). My iBook's DVD drive has had a firmware update to remove the illegal region coding. I find that I can get to just past the Mines of Moria on LotR: Fellowship of the Ring on a full charge with the screen brightness near full. That's about 2 hours in total. My battery is 18 months old now, so that's pretty good.
