There's a very good program called VLC (video lan client), that is free (GPL to be exact ;-). I think it does what you want, and on top of that it can play DVDs (ignoring region encoding) and can rip and encode them too, as well as being able to stream video across a network. It has plugins for QT, avi and divx, and I'm sure there are others too. All in all, it's a great piece of software.
