Go to the apple store and on the bottom left are 'limited time offers' I
think. There you can order refurb airport cards for $60. Work great for me
so far.

On your laptop you are limited to .11b

I've been told that if any node is running  .11b all comms are at .11b
rates. I'd go for the cheapest .11b access point you can find with 4
ethernet ports. If you're using a usb printer - consider one with usb print
server built in - although they are more expensive and compatibility may be
an issue.  By the time you're ready to upgrade .11g will be cheap or
superseaded - IMHO.
