Jill, if you are near a CompUSA, you may want to check out their ad 
this week (or you could do it online also). If your son will have any 
need for a transparency adapter, they have a CanoScan 3200F on sale for 
129.97. it  is a bit thicker than the canolide due to the transparency 
adapter that is built in.  It is a 48 bit with 9600 dpi enhanced 
resolution (this is probably the interpolated resolution). Doesn't say 
what software is included.

If you have a dot mac acct. check out the new photo editing software 
free from arcsoft and see if it will be enough for him currently. If 
so, CompUSA has the conolide 30 for $80 on sale.
