But then it's strange it worked the first time. When you installed the battery, was it already charged? Did you charge it? It could be that your power manager is screwed up - this could prevent the battery from getting charged. I've seen this on much older Macs - and the only solution, other than paying for expensive repairs, was to use them when plugged in.
