A few extra tidbits from Jack:

Connect both computers with a Firewire cable and then on both computers:

Create a new Location and name it Firewire or whatever you prefer.
Select Show:Network Port Configurations.
Uncheck all of the options and click the New... button.
Select Built-In Firewire and name it the same.
Drag it to the top of the list [or delete all of the other options]
Select Built-In Firewire in the Show: popup
Click the Renew DHCP lease button if an IP address does not appear.

Turn on Filesharing
Open Applications:Utilities:Directory Access and check Appletalk.

Now you can access the hds of the other computer in one of two ways:

In the Finder type Command+K and enter the IP address to create a hard
wired icon in the upper section of the Panther sidebar.
Click on the Network icon and then the other computers icon.

I didn't have any luck with the Automatic location the first time I
tried it so I did the above. This may be because Filesharing was turned
off which seems to cause me a lot of aggravation. I hope someone adds a
plug in for Location X to turn it on or off when I switch locations.

Maybe someone will point out the error of my ways, if such is...

Now I can network my Panther pbs with Airport, Ethernet and Firewire.
Coming soon ESP...
