Update--problem solved! After hours of troubleshooting, attempting many suggested solutions, deleting the .plist file for Scheduler solved the log in problem. My son used my clamshell to mount his iBook in target-disk mode and finally tracked down the problem by deleting .plist files one by one in the ~Library/Preferences directory. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.
