Firmware updates won't do it, the actual hardware is different. 11g requires much higher performance hardware than 11b, which means that a radio that wasn't designed with 11g in mind probably won't work for 11g, at least not very well. Since 11g didn't exist when the original airport cards came to be, I doubt they would be compliant with the spec, unlike the 11g cards that were designed to a draft version of the spec. The differences between the draft versions and the final were minimal and any issues were easier to correct in firmware.
