I run panther on a similar set up, but 256 Mb RAM.  For most things, 
I find it to work quite well.  One thing I did was go completely OSX. 
I didn't load 'classic' and I got rid of all the OS9 apps, etc, 
before installing.  I found this gave me enough disk space for most 
things, but I do have an external for my photos and for back up. 
The internal drive is quite small (3Gb I think).
