Jack - 

    I was less than clear in my original post.  My apologies.

    What I should have said was that the internal modem in my iBook fired up
and tried to dial out each time I used the iBook, now on the ABS, to collect
mail, etc.  I was not referring to the ABS modem.

    I remembered the >automatically dial out< checkbox, went to it,
unchecked it, and now that problem is fixed.
