I'm inclined to agree with Harry on this, in this situation. The easiest solution is, of course, buy your own Internet acess and set up your own wireless network, and then you can do what you please with it; make it open, make it closed, share it with your neighborhood (depending on your ISP's policies) or don't. You make the choice for yourself, rather than for someone else. Of course, it's not as easy as using someone else's, but maybe it's the more honest solution. For me, I just wouldn't feel comfortable using someone else's Internet access unless I have very good reason to believe I have permission to do so (beyond just making assumptions that because the network is not protected it's open to the public).
