Open Terminal.app (it is in the Utilities folder of Applications) and type
ls -la in the directory you wish to see the hidden files or directories. To
simplify changing directories to the one you want to check simply navigate
to the spot in a finder window and then drag this location to the Terminal
window and let go...it will list the directory for you and all you need to
do then is to additionally type 'cd 'at the beginning of the line and press
return to get there.

Alternatively, once you know the location of the hidden directory you can
sometimes use the Finder menu command Go/Go to Folder to bring up some of
the folders in a new finder window, for example by typing /etc or /bin

Use any of these concepts with extreme caution though as it is easy to do
lots of harm with only a few keystrokes...That is why they are hidden from
view in the first place!

There are ways to show the .hidden files all the time but this is not
recommended. For more information check out the X-Unix mailing list
archives.
