[P1] Cameras

Sorry - that was somewhat vague.

the xD cards I saw in shops were about twice the price than a CF card
of the same capacity. CF has a larger form-factor than xD, but I think
it's still small enough that it won't result in a larger camera.

It seems to me that xD is a proprietary format, and is only made by one
manufacturer (I could be wrong about this) - resulting in a higher
price. I got a 512mb CF card for AU$200, whereas a 256mb xD card was
AU$226.
I don't know what (if any) advantage the xD media have over other flash
media. Perhaps someone does? Perhaps they're just a way of tying
consumers in to one particular camera (in the same way as SLR lenses
are not inter-compatible)...

The problem with xD ('less useful generally'), as far as I'm concerned,
is that no other device uses them. CF cards can be used in many devices
- so one can buy fewer cards.

If we take this to the logical extreme, it's like having a separate and
incompatible storage medium for every device - definitely NOT in the
consumer interest!

From what I saw, though, the Olympus and Fujifilm cameras seemed like
good ones. I was trying to make a decision between the Olympus C-760
and the Canon A75, and the CF vs xD thing was enough to sway me to the
latter.

Cheers,
-Angus
