[iBook] Airport Extreme Card Issue

Hello,

	I am a new addition to the mac world and I have G4 Ibook.  I purchased an Airport Extreme card which I installed myself, making sure that it clicked into place and that the antenna is fully connected.  The card is recognized by the computer as being installed.  However, whenever I go to hotspots around my campus where I am attending graduate school.  The card does not recognize a network being present.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Is the card faulty?  I would appreciate any information people would have.  Thank you very much in advance.
