I think of it as a concious design decision -- for the elegance of a 
slot-loading drive, with fewer mechanical parts to wear down and no 
tray to break (a particular problem with a portable computer), you 
trade off the ability to read non-standard CD sizes. It's a sacrifice 
I'm more than willing to make.
