Try this: get a Firewire hard drive enclosure, put the hard drive in it, then connect it to the new iBook. See if you can boot from the Firewire drive (hold down the Option key at boot-up, I think). If it works, just mirror the whole shebang over to the iBook's internal drive and use the old one as a scratch or overflow drive.
