Videolan seems to be the best for playback.

As for the extensions I'd suggest trimming the extra bits off and just 
leave AVI.

Periodically when getting TV shows from different sources they'll play 
back in VideoLan but not on my LiteOn DVD/DivX player so I need to 
recode them with ffmpegX  - which was an amazing pain in the ass to get 
working with all the modules etc.
