[iBook] Apps quitting

What version of OS X?

Forget permissions until you have repaired your disk directory. 
(Which is what Disk Utility and DiskWarrior are for.) Run DiskWarrior 
and let it replace your directory.

Then, repair permissions, not from your OS install disc, but from 
Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
