[iBook] journaling?

How effective/helpful/necessary is "journaling"? I have it turned on  
and it slows my Mac down. On another Mac I have it turned off and  
that Mac runs well and fast.
I'm going to look at what apple has to say, but sometimes  
straightforward opinions from a list like this are more helpful.
