[iBook] start up disk full

Hi 
I am a mac user/was pc. My computer is telling me my
start up disk is full and delete some files. is this
my hard drive? I  don't know how to do a lot of
maintenance yet with a mac. how do i defrag a mac, is
there such a thing.
