Not necessarily -- I had a similar problem with my iMac G5 where I  
had to be within a few feet of a wireless device to get any sort of  
reception, and it turned out that the cable connection to the antenna  
wasn't seated properly. iBooks tend to have the best reception of all  
-- if you're having a problem, I'd check the AirPort card first.
